Everything a first-time mum-to-be needs to know….

There’s a reason we don’t often do Pregnancy & Baby Expos with our maternity collection by sorella organics. They are quite simply too overwhelming, too busy, too noisy, and (in my opinion) consist of just an unbearable amount of information for any one person to take in.

With so many brands, in one HUGE venue, it must be so hard to make choices and decisions of what’s best for mum and her family? In fact, I wonder if some mums come out MORE confused than she was when she went in?!!

There’s only one Pregnancy Event we are currently a part of, and the reason is simple – it’s a small, beautiful, stress-free event – full of great information and advice so first-time mums don’t have to spend their entire pregnancy sifting through an overload of information and decisions – or fight for a carpark at an Expo.

They can instead spend their time enjoying their pregnancy and focus on more important things – like preparing for baby’s safe arrival.

So, we are thrilled to announce sorella organics will be attending the The Baby Workshop, hosted by The Baby Consultant again this year.

The first of its kind, the exclusive workshop brings together first time mums to mingle, enjoy afternoon tea, & see everything they need for their new baby lifestyle.

sorella sale time!

If you are a sorella-devotee you will note we don’t have sales very often.

sale FB cover photo BW

But it’s the ‘end of financial year’ here in Australia, and with that it means: tax time.

And with tax time comes stocktake. And with stocktake comes sitting on the floor for countless hours, days even, counting lots and lots of PJs.

You will probably know from my whingeing that I moved house this past week. I survived by the way – but it’s not yet the end. There’s a mountain of boxes still around me and I have been forced to create a very strategic ‘valley’ throughout the house to enable me to get to the most important places one needs – the fridge and the bed. I have even bribed the delivery guy of our new couch with beer to PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take some empty boxes in his van.

So with this added household chaos – I just couldn’t cope with the thought of our annual event of counting womens, mens, and maternity sleepwear!

What a snooze-fest!

So I came up with the ingenious plan to have a sale. The more we sell the less we have to count. I’m sure our accountant will see some sort of positives in this approach to my business, no?

Anyway. Get amongst it. Because apart from doing yourself a favour by sleeping in some organic cotton, you are doing me a favour by not losing days of my precious life counting.

Shop here: www.sorellaandme.com.au – We have up to 50% off selected styles from every collection – menswear, womens and maternity wear. So whether you are pregnant, a fella needing to ditch your baggy pilly tracksuit pants you’ve had since 2005, or you need a gift for a friend – there is something for everyone.

My sincere thanks! anna x

A lifetime supply of pjs? Who would say no to that!

You may have noticed I’ve been MIA from the sorella-hood since Christmas. Sorry. And thank you to those people who lovingly asked “Where have you been?! When’s your next post?!” Delightful to know you enjoy catching up with us each week in our random silliness!

My hiatus from writing probably stemmed from the start of summer (sun, beach, cocktails). I think I must have embraced the week off at Chrissy a little more than I realised. Time to take a little breath. Some stillness. A few stunning sunrises…

Resting was fabulous. {If you are a regular in the ‘hood you’ll know I managed to get a little burnt out last yeara follow up post on how I managed getting myself out of that mess is to come – a clue… I haven’t}.

It was sunrises-a-plenty when before I knew it 2014 was slapping me in the face telling me to put down the cocktail and my mum’s hedgehog and get on with things – and it’s hard to believe almost 3 months has passed since it did.

So what’s been happening? How have you been?

We’ve enjoyed welcoming many new lovers of sorella including lots of blokes! The mens collection was a big hit for Christmas gifts and continues to sell out as soon as we get stock back in (did you see the lovely people Peppermint Magazine did a review?). And I dare say (at high risk of offending him) the very fact that my Uncle has been back for his second pair of shorts in as many months is good proof they are bloody good shorts. He is very fussy you see.

"Mens loungewear doesn't have to mean ancient, baggy, pilly tracksuit pants. It can actually be stylish, made from organic fabric and so comfortable that the transition from yoga to yard work to sleepwear is seamless." Damn straight Peppermint Magazine!! The women of the world agree!

And of course, as you might already know we have a new addition to our family. Alisha welcomed her daughter Estelle into the world on December 30 (and we have been gushing over her ever since). Continue reading

My top 5 (okay, 6) brands to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight!

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight! This a great opportunity for us to understand how making more informed choices on the products we buy can have a huge impact on the lives of those less fortunate.

The FairTrade logo

The Fairtrade logo

Fairtrade is described by the Fairtrade Association of Australia & NZ (an arm of Fairtrade International) as:

Better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices, Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.

Fairtrade International have developed a strict global certification process to allow consumers greater confidence when buying everyday products that come from areas in the world where working conditions, rights, and pay can be unethical.

I have worked in India with Oxfam, and Vietnam with CARE Vietnam and I have seen first-hand how the cycle of poverty can grip communities when they are treated unfairly.  Why should we have the benefit of paying just $10 for a piece of clothing if it means a family can’t afford to eat? That doesn’t seem very fair does it?  To understand more about the principle of Fairtrade, check out this previous post.

For today, I’m going to share 5 super duper brands that are working hard to ensure their products are sustainable and ethical. This might mean that they are made using Fairtrade materials, made with sustainable textiles that have been sourced ethically and locally, or they have been able to go that one step further and have had the actual product produced certified under Fairtrade International if it has been made in a developing country (This will be evident by a little Fairtrade logo on the product packaging – and deserves a high 5 for sure!).

  1. Eternal Creation – certified by Fairtrade International. They have some super cute pieces for little ones!

    2. Green & Blacks Chocolate – certified by Fairtrade International (and is also organic!). It’s now deliciously available pretty much everywhere – so no excuses to reach for that other nasty stuff now!

3. Nerada Tea Organics Range – certified by Fairtrade International. My 2 favourites are the Green and Chamomile.  You can find this brand in most major and some independent supermarkets.

4. Pure Pod – Made in Australia using sustainable materials.  Considered a pioneer in ethical fashion in Australia.

5. Sinerji – a sustainable & ethical collection using natural dyes and organic cotton.

And I had better sneak one more in – we can’t forget the love of my life, sorella & me.  Our collection is made using certified Fairtrade cotton (and is also certified organic).  We use an Australian sewer but have been providing skills transfer and capacity building to a small family-run Fiji manufacturer for the past 18 months. We are so excited they are now ready to join the sorella & me team! By providing them an ongoing opportunity for work will ensure sustainable income and at the same time improve skills and employability – both of which are major concerns for most Fijians with its current poor economic conditions and regular natural disasters that destroy many businesses.

A G-string is like a landline telephone – no longer necessary

It’s exactly 7 days til my wedding – which is why I am taking the lazy sensible option and re-blogging one of our most popular posts from last year – and it’s timed well given it’s the big V day next week (fyi, no I’m not getting married on Valentines Day, we are the 15th! So no excuses for J1 not to give me flowers 2 days in a row!).

I think you will enjoy it – and I thank you for giving me the grace of re-posting while I madly dash out to sort out my fiance’s tie (because apparently I am marrying a man who doesn’t feel the pressure of an important deadline)….

According to a study in 2008, French women spend 20% of their income on lingerie.  Yes, you heard me, 20-bloody-percent. This is probably about the same amount that I spend on car, life, home and health insurance all rolled into one (and there’s nothing sexy about insurance).

I vow to take the 20% approach when I one day look like this:

40 ways out of trouble with Fashionista’s Australia

We got lots of great feedback (and sighs of relief) when we posted last weeks round up of the best Christmas gift guides. But there has been one more guide pop up this week we just have to share because a) we know you will love it, b) these girls know what they are talking about when it comes to beautiful things, and c) we are certain it will save you those likely headaches over the next 5 days trying to figure out what your sister really needs as opposed to what she is telling you she wants….
