My life mission: To rid the world of man’s ugly, pilly, baggy track pants and thigh-high polyester shorts

It’s fathers day in little over 8 days in Australia. Time to celebrate the men in our life.

Father's Day in the sorella-hood

And if your dad is anything like mine (sensitive, grumpy, a little needy, a lot argumentative, and always right…. But also generous, kind-hearted, supportive, totally lovable, and worth enduring the annoying first listed traits) – then might I suggest you avoid risking the ordinary this fathers day?

The ordinary being, an ordinary blah blah father’s day gift.

My dad always says he doesn’t want anything. But I’ve never seen him turn down a box of Darrell Lea Chocolates come the big day (He has to rely getting those from one of my sisters’ these days though as there are questions whether they ethically source their cacao…. Poor dad).

So this year (like the last) I’ll be sporting Dad out in some sorella men’s pieces.

Yes he already has a draw-full, but he has secretly told my mum that they are the comfiest dacks going ’round. And he’s been around a while my dad – so he’d know.

And that’s why I think you should get a pair for your dad too. Or maybe for hubby from the kids!

A happy Dad is… well… a happy dad. And let’s be honest, we really do need to rid the population of ugly, pilly, baggy track pants and shorts.

Getting back to basics

I did start planning a holiday in a resort.  The weather was forecast pretty terrible and although I enjoyed the idea of a resort pool, day spa and room service, I did secretly like the idea of a holiday that was ‘about the kids’.  In a tent, behind sand dunes allowing them to run and play and be freeeeeeeeee.

always an early start when camping with children- surf's up!

It is always an early start when camping with children – surf’s up!

So the recent school holidays we packed up ALOT of ‘stuff’ and went camping.  I grew up doing a lot of camping with my family.  I thought camping was what all families did on holidays!  We hadn’t been on a camping trip for a while though.  Things have been pretty busy and getting away was a luxury we just couldn’t seem to fit in.

It’s amazing how much children learn when they are taken into a new environment. Not just bike riding and scootering, but how to tie knots, heading to night markets because there is no agenda to worry about tiredness the next day, dancing in the pub at the Sunday session (oops that was me but my daughter did learn how to create a beat with a black sock and a box!), how to cook toast without a toaster, how to play board games (remember those?!!) and the list goes on and on.

I will admit I found it a bit difficult to completely disconnect from the online world.  Our neighbour campers with teenage children had their i-devices all charging at the bbq area and there were 8 getting re-booted!  But my 5-year-old didn’t miss TV or movies on the iPad.  She was happy teaching her little brother how to play snap in the tent – or at least telling him when to snap to give him a win (love her to bits!)

Enjoying the outdoors and playing with no reason to have to stop!

BUT – next holiday perhaps I will consider a comfy bed in a resort! My sleep was disrupted because I was up checking the kids were covered NUMEROUS times throughout the night, so this was pretty tiresome.

The perfect picnic spot. Tweed Coast.

On the upside, I got to sleep with the sound of rain on the tent with my little family close by, and that was pretty damn cosy and fun!!

Daddy’s got the blues

This week is Post Natal Depression Awareness Week. With 1800 Australians being diagnosed every week, it’s no surprise that Australian organisation’s such as PANDA (Post and Ante Natal Depression Association) have dedicated a week-long campaign to raise awareness in the community of this debilitating condition.

But what I am taking from this week is something unexpected.

PANDA suggests that 1 in 7 women and 1 in 14 men are diagnosed with post-natal depression (PND) annually.

Yes I said 1 in 14 men.

In fact, it is suggested that this figure could be actually be a lot higher because while men have a similar predisposition for developing PND as women, they are less likely to come forward for diagnosis and support.

In basic terms, this means there could be many dad’s out there either not understanding what they are feeling, or if they do, they may feel ashamed or worry about being considered less masculine if they put their hand up for help.

Celebrating Baby’s 1st Birthday!

It’s Baby M’s 1st Birthday today!

The gorgeous cherub we were lucky to have in our photoshoot last year is Baby M. She was just 2 weeks old at the time and it was her first big outing with mum. We loved having her there for the afternoon – the whole atmosphere of the shoot changed as soon as she arrived. What was a mid-afternoon slump in energy after an action packed 6 hours of shooting, quickly changed pace with the arrival of Baby M still with her yummy new baby smell – there is nothing quite as special as a new baby!

What are the best things about being a Dad?

It’s Day 4 of our Dad-Fest in the sorella-hood with Father’s Day coming up on Sunday!

It’s a special time for all families – especially those with Dad’s who are celebrating their FIRST FATHER’S DAY! Yay for you!

For today’s post, we wanted to know what it is that’s so special about being a Dad. So we asked 5 sorella dads just that:

“What are the best things about being a Dad?”
