Your first date: A divine start to your relationship – or disaster?

President Obama and First Lady Michelle have spoken about their first date in 1989 as part of a competition to win dinner with the couple.

Love or hate his politics, you must be lacking a pulse if you aren’t at least a teeny-tiny bit drawn to Obama’s charismatic, down to earth, warm personality.

Watch how chuffed he is with his first-date success. He is so happy with himself (and with snagging a woman like Michelle, it’s understandable why), that he advises single blokes should be taking notes….

The best bit is where he looks down the camera and advises: “Art – guys out there – it impresses people.” Too funny.

My first date with J1 was lovely – I took it as a good sign that he didn’t fall asleep on me. But what followed afterwards was probably more memorable…

My car was stolen the same night after I got home, and it led to a series of wacky events that made for an interesting few weeks to the start of our relationship. Visualise a new couple, trying to impress each other, getting around in the ‘company car’ until I could arrange a permanent replacement.

The problem?

The ‘company car’ was from my workplace at the time – Camp Quality (the Children’s Cancer Charity) and happened to be their “Giggle Van” complete with Giggle himself sitting in the back looking at us (a life-sized speaking puppet on a trike – and to be honest, I used to find him a little spooky).

Picking J1 up from his work at Parliament House (Canberra) was reasonably embarrassing. The Australia Protective Service guys always got a good laugh.

What was your first date like? Memorable or Miserable? And did it set the tone for your ongoing relationship?
