The last 12 months has seen some of the biggest celebrities either give birth, adopt, or fall pregnant. For today’s post we thought a little fashion drool-fest was in order to inspire the maternity wardrobe for some of our sorellas who are expecting, and for the new mummies out there in the playgrounds or off to school pick up!!
I had prepared myself to see over-styled, unachievable ensembles, however I was relieved to instead find everyday casual looks that are absolutely attainable for all of us lacking a full-time stylist!
Yep – maternity and mummy-chic is about a throw-over pretty print dress, practical jeans so you can pick your child up from the sand-pit, flats or trainers to get you to the school gate on time, and comfy tops or jackets to give you a little style yet let you move freely to juggle your child, nappy bag, pram and other daily mummy essentials.
And let me tell you, most of these pics show limited hair & make-up work too (and we all know how achievable THAT is)!
We can’t start a post like this and not feature Sarah Jessica Parker at the top. Would you agree that she epitomises casual mummy-cool?
SJP was spotted by a girlfriend of mine while shopping in a Bonds store on her visit to Melbourne last September. She apparently looked incredibly chic but still practical in relaxed jeans, flats, and a jacket, much like the pic above. My friend said she looked just like a regular mum out shopping, except she had a big gruff-looking security guard as her shadow!
Jessica Alba (below) always looks ‘done’ but ‘not’… if you get what I mean? Jeans are always a good choice for the playground. And I love the cute hat to cover up the haven’t-got-time-to-have-a-shower-mummy-hair! Great trick.
I’m so excited that Reece Witherspoon is pregnant with her third baby. I’m loving her easy maternity style both on and off the red carpet. Did you see her glammed up last week in Cannes? She looked pretty hot! Below she keeps it casual in a polka-dot summer dress that flatters her bump. Maternity clothing never looked so easy!
Every time we see Miranda Kerr she seems to either be in a highly styled fashion shoot or an airport! It’s her airport-style that us mere mortals have a chance of replicating. Usually in jeans and flats or trainers, Miranda looks effortless (below) with a loose top and a large shoulder bag to carry all her mummy-essentials. (We also love that Flynn’s wears an amber necklace to help with his teething! But we wouldn’t expect anything less from the Queen of Natural).
Have you seen Nicole Kidman on the latest cover of Harper’s Bazaar with her daughter Faith? I never thought I was one of those people influenced by who was on the cover of a magazine, but I can honestly say I want to buy this edition because of that photo! Maybe because Nicole is normally so private so a stylised shoot with one of her daughters is so rare?
We often only see her on the red carpet, but I found this photo with husband Keith Urban and two girls. Love the relaxed dress – note the length – perfect for Mums on the go.
Michelle Williams loves a ballet flat, and it makes great sense when out and about with daughter Matilda. Below with friend Busy Phillips and their daughters, Michelle shows how a loose print dress, worn with a leather jacket can look great but is also practical.
Another simple print dress but this time it’s Beyonce out and about with daughter Blue Ivy. Looks like it could actually be a shirt-dress which would make nursing easier with buttons down the front. Teamed with a sandal, this is a great look for new Mums in the warmer months. Perhaps for us here facing an Australian winter – this would work with tights, flat boots and a jacket?
Got something a bit more special to go to? Take a cue from Sienna Miller’s maternity wardrobe and keep the base comfy then up the ante with accessories. Currently pregnant with her first child, Sienna certainly does the baby bump well in a grey (and very comfy-looking) knitted dress. Add a little bit of detail including a belt, some stable heels, a fancy handbag and you are set to go to Robert Patterson’s 26th birthday (yep, this is what she wore to his party!). I think this could be very do-able for lots of Mums!
So there you have it. Some simple and achievable fashion ideas for both maternity and mummy style.
Have you got a style tip for Preggie or new Mums that worked for you?
